I am available to take on consulting projects in the areas of linguistics and the English language. Previous clients and collaborators have included Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, Cambridge University Press, Comms2Point0, Engage, English & Media Centre, Mischief PR, the National Trust, Oldham Council, Reed Business Information, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and TENA. Please contact me if you are interested in working with me.

The following are some examples of my consultancy work.

Speaking Nature’s Language – The National Trust (2019)

I was commissioned by the National Trust to investigate changes in the usage of nature-related vocabulary in British English.

Using the Spoken British National Corpus 2014 and its predecessor from the 1990s, I found that several nature words (e.g. tweet, stream and web) had changed in meaning in favour of new technologies.

The result was the launch of a new campaign on the National Trust’s website, encouraging young people to engage with nature. This was accompanied by a promotional video which can be viewed below. The launch of the campaign was picked up by several national media outlets.

Talent – Cambridge University Press (2018)

I was commissioned by Cambridge University Press to investigate changes in the usage of nature-related vocabulary in British English.

Using a range of English corpora, I tracked several recent changes in spoken and written English, for example the use of I’m good as a refusal in casual conversation.

My findings were used in the Talent coursebook series and accompanying videos, a sample of which can be viewed below.
